Hungary postpones NATO vote

class=”sc-3778e872-0 gWjAEa”>

As the news portal “atv.hu” learned on Friday from factions of the ruling party Fidesz, it is now planned that the parliament will vote on March 31 on the ratification of the accession protocols.

Apart from Turkey, Hungary is the last NATO country that has not yet ratified the accession of the two Nordic countries. Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who is in charge of everything in the country, has repeatedly spoken in favor of accepting the accession protocols, but has repeatedly had the debate and vote on the documents postponed under various pretexts. He complained, among other things, that Swedish and Finnish politicians and the media had unfairly criticized Hungary for deficiencies in the rule of law and corruption.

The ratification of the protocols is considered assured as soon as a vote is taken. The left and liberal opposition also wants to vote for it. By the first week of March, Parliament had concluded its debate on the documents. The week starting on March 21 was then set as the period for the final vote.

This was still on the agenda of the parliamentary session on Friday afternoon. However, this is not binding. At the same time, no draft of the week’s agenda had appeared on Parliament’s website by that same date.
