So your spring flowers will live longer in the vase.

The sun is shining, the trees are budding – the first spring fever takes many people straight to the garden center. As far as the eye can see: tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and buttercups. Flowers add color to the home. Self-picked wildflowers reminiscent of warm summer evenings in the garden or elegant arrangements from the florist – flowers are not only decorations, but also a part of spring. We asked Annamarie Schär, a florist at Marsano on Löwenstrasse in Zurich, how flower bouquets stay fresh longer.

use real water

According to the expert, the first step before putting the bouquet should be to clean the vase. This prevents bacteria from forming that can damage the flowers. Schär also recommends changing the water every other day. The florist explains that most flowers need cold water. But individual flowers, such as hydrangeas, need warm water, Schär says. That’s why it’s always good to consult a florist when buying flowers so you can customize the care.

“We always give our customers Chrysal to put in the water.” The probiotic agent keeps the water clean and inhibits the growth of bacteria. You can also add a few drops of Javel to the water, according to Schär, but be careful with this because too much Javel can damage the flowers.

Trim the flowers properly

  • Different flowers require different cuts. “Rigid stem flowers should always be cut at an angle,” explains Schär. For example, roses belong to flowers with hard stems.
  • According to Schär, tulips should be cut straight with a sharp knife, not scissors! These just crush the stems. Tulip stems should just sit in a little fresh water in the vase. Very important: The water should be replenished frequently, but not completely replaced. That’s why you should pour the fresh water over the old one on time.
  • Daffodils do not like other flowers as neighbors in the vase. But if you want to make a bouquet of daffodils, there is a trick. First you put them in the vase alone – at least for a day, then they get thinner. Then wash the stems and interfaces and don’t cut them again, clean the vase. With the new water we can pair them with other cut flowers.

  • Cut a thin slice from the root of the hyacinth and place it alone in a vase of cold water. Ideally, the water in the vase should be changed every two to three days.

  • The expert also recommends cutting flowers every other day.
  • Ranunculus also does not like too much water at once. You need to replace it every couple of days and cut the stems at an angle so you can enjoy a ranunculus bouquet for about 10 days.

  • It may also be beneficial to remove the lower leaves of the flowers. So they do not fall into the water where they will rot.

Choose the right location

Flowers last longer when they are in the right place. “Flowers don’t like being in direct sunlight. But you know that, right?” Schär says with a smile about her choice of location. It is better to put the bouquet in a cooler place. If the air in your home is particularly dry, humidifying the flowers from time to time can help.

The bouquet should also not be placed next to a fruit basket. Flowers dry faster due to the ethylene gas emitted by the fruit.
