According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, protesters on Wednesday called for “the fall of the regime”. With the demonstrations, the Syrians showed that the revolution in the country continued. According to the activists, people took to the streets in the cities of Idlib, Raqqa and Afrin, among others.
Footage posted on social media showed protesters waving Syrian opposition flags and chanting against Assad.
On March 15, 2011, protests against Assad’s leadership broke out in Syria for the first time in the wake of the Arab uprisings. The security forces used violence against the demonstrators. This resulted in a civil war with international participation, which continues to this day.
The Syrian ruler, who brutally beats down his own people in the civil war, wanted to talk in Moscow on Wednesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the situation in Syria. Russia is considered one of Assad’s most important allies.
Tens of thousands of people are still being arbitrarily detained in Syria, UN-Syria mediator Geir Pedersen said Wednesday. Millions have suffered from the war. “Syria is devastated, divided and impoverished, in an active state of conflict that threatens its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.”
In recent weeks, however, all parties to the conflict have taken steps beyond their previous positions to facilitate humanitarian assistance in the country following the devastating quakes, Pedersen praised. He hopes for the same logic – such as confidence-building measures – for the urgently needed political solution to the conflict. “The earthquakes could be a turning point,” the UN mediator said.
In early February, northwestern Syria and southeastern Turkey were hit by several earthquakes. More than 50,000 people lost their lives in Turkey and Syria. (SDA)
