Rembrandt House reopened in Amsterdam

class=”sc-3778e872-0 gWjAEa”>

The Rembrandt House has been expanded with five new rooms, said museum director Milou Halbesma on Tuesday at the presentation of the building. “We are about a third bigger and now show even more of the painter’s personal life and his working method.”

The popular museum was closed for five months. It now opens with a masterpiece “Titus at his desk”. Some 400 years after Rembrandt painted his only son, the painting will return to the place where it was made for three months.

Rembrandt had bought the stately mansion on the Jodenbreestraat in Amsterdam at the age of 32 and lived there with his wife Saskia. They were a popular club couple in Amsterdam at the time. Rembrandt was extremely successful, had his studio and shop in his home and also taught his students there. And that’s where family life took place. His son Titus was born in the house and Saskia died there, only 29 years old.

The painter lived in the house for nearly 20 years, probably well beyond his means. In 1658 he was forced to sell it to pay his creditors. The once successful painter was broke.

Thank goodness for the museum. Because the inventory list exists. And from this list all the rooms were furnished – the elegant hall with many paintings, the family room with folding bed and crib, Rembrandt’s studio with four large windows through which the northern lights enter. The museum also shows how paint was made in the 17th century and, in a new studio, how Rembrandt made his etchings.

Before the reopening, the “Rembrandthuis” will also be showing 74 drawings by Rembrandt and his contemporaries from the American Peck Collection. The collection is on display in Europe for the first time.
