Referee boss admits errors in FCB excitement

The duel between Diouf (left) and Karlen is the subject of discussion.

After a good half hour, FC Basel celebrates against FC St. Gallen on Sunday. But Zeki Amdouni’s beautiful, alleged opening goal is annulled. The reason? Referee Fedayi San allowed the game to continue, but the VAR reported and summoned him to the screen. San looks at the scene and changes his mind. If he correctly classified Diouf’s somewhat impetuous performance in a duel with Karlen from the game, he judged it as a foul in the replay. Basel’s 1-0 does not count.

Coach Heiko Vogel no longer understands the world. “The referee is really bad. He is in a good position and decides ad hoc that it is not a foul. We score a beautiful goal, then the VAR comes,” he says after the game.

Referee boss Daniel Wermelinger looks at all the controversial scenes of the weekend on Monday and discusses them with his team. So also those of the game Basel. Compared to the “BZ”, he admits: “We stick to the mistake. The intervention of the VAR was not correct. We would have liked to see the decision on the field remain in force.”

Intervention threshold set too low

Wermelinger realizes that there have been too many interventions by the VAR lately. “In recent weeks we have repeatedly pointed out – internally and externally – that in individual cases the intervention threshold was and is being set too low.”

A fact that also concerns Blick referee expert Urs Meier. He wonders if the VAR should intervene at all when the referee gives a clear signal on the field. For Meier, however, it is clear: “If you look at the scene individually, then it is a violation.” Still, you should go through the books so that more uniform decisions can be made in the future.

You can also see that with the referees. After the season they want to put their heads together and make adjustments accordingly. (bir)
