Passerby discovers a body stuck upside down in a manhole near Cologne

A passerby discovered a body upside down in a manhole on a country road near the German city of Cologne on Sunday morning. An emergency doctor could only determine the death of the unknown, according to a police spokesman.

The circumstances of the fact are still unclear, it said. The body discovered on a country road in Niederkassel-Lülsdorf was covered in cracks. A box was discovered nearby, which may have driven the fissure down to the shaft. The police set up a murder squad.

According to the information, a youth discovered sneakers protruding from a green strip between a pedestrian and bicycle path and the street there. He alerted the police. The body was eventually dug out of the manhole by firefighters. She was wrapped in a blood-soaked blanket. (sda/dpa)
