Kim supervised firing exercises by an artillery unit on the “western front” to check their current readiness for war, state-controlled media reported Friday. Attacks on enemy airports were also simulated on Thursday by launching a “powerful salvo” towards the sea.
No countries were named in the report. However, North Korea, largely isolated internationally because of its nuclear weapons program, sees the US and South Korea as enemies. Kim is also said to have said that the artillery assault units serve as a deterrent on the one hand, but must also be able to take the initiative in a war. To do this, they would have to step up their “simulated exercises for a real war”.
At a meeting of the ruling Labor Party earlier this year, Kim called for more military maneuvers and increased readiness of the armed forces for war. Tensions on the Korean peninsula have escalated significantly since last year. North Korea is increasingly testing nuclear-powered missiles, despite being banned by UN resolutions.
