After wave of drug violence: Argentina wants to “clean up” Messi’s hometown US: special investigation into chemical train accident in eastern Palestine

Following the recent spate of violence in Rosario, the Argentine government has launched a security offensive in the hometown of football superstar Lionel Messi.

On Wednesday, 300 additional federal police officers arrived in the port city on the Paraná River. “There is a lot to do. Nothing that needs to be done is easy. But it is necessary to get to the heart of the matter,” Security Minister Aníbal Fernández said at the introduction of the new officials.

“It is necessary to clean up the neighborhoods.”

Following a series of high-profile acts of violence in Rosario, the Argentine government announced it would increase the number of federal police officers to 1,400. In addition, the Army Corps of Engineers will assist in refurbishing the slums. “It is necessary to clean the neighborhoods,” said Security Minister Fernández. “We will invest what is necessary. We will not stand still.”

Rosario suffers a wave of violence. Several drug gangs vie for control of the city northwest of Buenos Aires. So far this year, 64 people have been killed in Rosario.

Recently, an 11-year-old boy was shot dead in the street by suspected drug dealers and three other children were injured in the attack. Due to the inaction of the police authorities, the relatives and their neighborhood then resorted to vigilance and attacked the drug dealers.

The incident at a glance:

In the past week, unknown persons also fired 14 shots at the supermarket of Lionel Messi’s father-in-law, leaving a note that read: “Messi, we are waiting for you.” (con/sda/dpa)
