Couple steal million bottles of wine from restaurant

A few crooks have looted the wine cellar of a star restaurant in Spain. It stole 45 bottles worth the equivalent of 1.5 million Swiss francs. The former Mexican beauty queen and her Dutch-Romanian boyfriend were tried for this, CNN reports. The verdict: four years in prison for the woman and four and a half years for the man. In addition, there is compensation of the equivalent of 748,000 francs.

The robbery took place on October 27, 2021 in restaurant and hotel Atrio in Caceres. According to the indictment, the action was planned “down to the smallest detail”. The duo would have eaten in the restaurant three times before the robbery and even received a tour of the wine cellar. Then there was a 14-course menu.

Receptionist was distracted

On the night of the attack, the woman is said to have checked into the luxury hotel next to the restaurant with a fake Swiss passport. Around 2 o’clock at night the movie was ready. According to the court, the two distracted the only working receptionist by asking for a late night snack so the man could sneak into the tasting room.

While the receptionist was preparing a salad in the kitchen, the man carried dozens of bottles of wine to her room in a backpack and two large bags. The bottles were wrapped in towels so as not to fly off when the loot rattled.

There’s no trace of the bottles

The man was only after the good wines. Including a bottle from the 1806 vintage, which was listed on the wine list for 347,000 francs. The loot also included bottles from the French winery Chateau d’Yquem. Another bottle from 1883 is said to have been worth 44,000 francs.

They then checked out at 5 a.m. and, according to the court order, made off with the stolen goods. When the couple was arrested in July 2022 at the Montenegro-Croatia border, authorities were unable to find any bottles. So far there is no trace of them.
