What is known about the new Russian bomb

They pose a new deadly threat to Ukraine: Ukrainian military news site Defense Express writes that Russia has used UPAB-1500V bombs in the Chernihiv region for the first time. Their 1010 kg warheads are designed to destroy heavily fortified objects.

With fighter jets, the projectiles can be fired from an altitude of 14 kilometers. That is high enough to stay out of the range of Ukrainian air defenses. The bombs slide up to 40 kilometers – and develop their destructive effect on the ground.

A built-in, satellite-assisted navigation system ensures that the UPAB-1500V bombs usually do not miss their target. The system also allows the explosives to adjust their speed – thus flying slower or faster.

UPAB-1500V found in Chernihiv

The Russian Su-34 bombers can drop the missiles. Such an aircraft loaded with UPAB-1500V is said to have been shot down by the Ukrainian army near Yenakiyev.

In addition, debris from a UPAB-1500V was reportedly found in the Chernihiv region a few weeks ago. Independent sources have not yet confirmed the airdrop. Moscow has been silent on this until now.

First used in Syria

The armor-piercing bombs can destroy enemy bunkers, which is much more difficult to destroy with other means. That the Kremlin now has to resort to these kinds of bombs suggests that Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin (70) fears losing battles in some Ukrainian regions. It is unclear how much of the explosives Russia possesses.

UPAB-1500V bombs are used sporadically by Russia. The reason: The planes loaded with the bombs are easy to identify at the considerable altitude to which they must climb to drop and can just as easily be knocked out by other planes.

The manufacturer GNPP Region presented the UPAB-1500V bombs to the public at a military exhibition in 2019. The explosives are said to have been used in Syria in the same year.
