Philips Ambilight 937: with Dolby Vision, 120 Hertz and HDR10+
While the top products from LG and Sony only support the Dolby Vision HDR format, Samsung relies on HDR10+ as the best HDR technology. Buyers are spoiled for choice here. Philips, on the other hand, offers both and sets itself apart from the competition.
With the Ambilight TV 937 you can be sure that you are always in the top class when it comes to image quality. The screen is one of the absolute highlights, because it not only offers razor-sharp images, but also a super-bright image and maximum contrast with deep black.
The smart TV’s Ambilight feature adds to the impressive look of the OLED 937. LEDs are attached to the back that illuminate the wall behind your television in a color that matches the current image. Gamers will also be happy with the two HDMI 2.1 inputs and the 120 Hertz screen.
The second highlight of the Ambilight TV is the integrated soundbar from the British manufacturer Bower & Wilkins. Eleven speakers are installed in the soundbar and provide full surround sound that makes any other smart TV without an integrated soundbar look or sound really old.
The soundbar can also be used via WLAN to play music via Spotify, Amazon Music or other streaming apps. In terms of operation, you have to compromise with the Philips OLED 937: The menu is quite complicated and requires practice. However, this criticism only concerns the settings of the television. The smart TV menu is as usual easy to use.
Alternatives: A cheap Ambilight TV & an OLED TV from LG
However, if you don’t have the resources for the high-end TV from Philips, there are good alternatives. The Philips Ambilight TV PUS8507 is also currently discounted. The variant with 58 inches (146 centimeters) costs 645 euros at Amazon with 35 percent savings compared to the suggested retail price.
This Ambilight TV also supports HDR10+ and Dolby Vision and scores with a strong display. However, the panel offers not 120, but “only” 60 hertz, which is only important for sports broadcasting and gaming. In addition, this is not an OLED, but an LED TV. The picture is still great and given the considerably lower price, the PUS8507 is a good and cheap alternative to the 937.
If, on the other hand, you can do without the Ambilight function, then the LG OLED C1 is an option for you. The variant with 55 inches (139 centimeters) costs at MediaMarkt and Saturn* currently only 999 euros with a 50 percent discount.
The C1 relies on an OLED display with 120 Hertz and very good image quality, which the competition simply cannot match in terms of peak brightness. Two HDMI 2.1 connections also make gamers’ hearts beat faster – a perfect alternative to the more expensive Philips 937 without Ambilight.
