Belarusian Nobel laureate Byalyatski sentenced

class=”sc-97fd9fa8-0 jNFKxv”>

The 60-year-old was sentenced Friday in Minsk for alleged financial crimes, according to the civil rights organization Vyazna, which Byalyatski co-founded.

Byalyatski has been detained since July 2021. He had previously spent several years in prison. Last year, the civil rights activist was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He received the prize together with the Russian organization Memorial and the Ukrainian human rights organization Center for Civil Liberties. Belarusian leaders criticized the award as a “politicized decision”.

Founded in Belarus in 1996, Vyazna is the country’s best-known civil and human rights organization. It was launched during pro-democracy protests a few years after the fall of the Soviet Union to support arrested protesters and their families.
