Kremlin allegedly funded 20 torture chambers in Kherson Cambodia opposition leader sentenced to 27 years in prison

About 20 torture cells in the Ukrainian city of Kherson were allegedly funded directly by the Russian state. Not a coincidence, but part of a plan, experts say.

About 20 torture chambers in the Ukrainian city of Kherson were planned and funded directly by the Russian state. An international legal team reported this on Thursday.

The city was under Russian control for eight months until November 11, when Ukrainian forces entered and recaptured Kherson.

The legal team, called the “Mobile Justice Team”, consists of a group of international lawyers and detectives. Evidence collected by Ukrainian prosecutors and analyzed by the Mobile Justice Team includes plans used by Vladimir Putin’s occupying forces to set up, manage and fund the 20 torture centers in Kherson.

«Eliminating the national and cultural identity of Ukraine»

The team has concluded that the Russian state-funded mass torture chambers are no coincidence. Instead, they were part of a carefully thought-out and funded design. The clear goal: «Eliminate the national and cultural identity of Ukraine». That said British lawyer Wayne Jordash, who took charge of the team.

Jordash told US broadcaster CNBC that the torture sites were directly managed by various Kremlin security agencies, including the Russian Secret Service (FSB).

Survivors can provide evidence

More than 1,000 survivors have provided evidence of torture and more than 400 people have disappeared from Kherson, lawyers said. The detainees included anyone associated with the Ukrainian state or civil society. These include activists, journalists, civil servants and teachers. Other victims said they were arbitrarily stopped in the street and arrested for allegedly having “pro-Ukrainian material” on their mobile phones.

The places of torture served several purposes. People there were not only detained and interrogated, but also beaten and transformed. In interviews with the lawyers, survivors also said that electric shocks and waterboarding were common tactics used by Russian troops in the torture centers. In some cases, they were also forced to memorize and recite pro-Russian slogans, poems and songs. (oo)
