Government parties want faster expansion of wind energy

“Especially for wind energy and for the expansion of the electricity grids, we were able to agree on important measures to speed things up,” said group leader Katharina Dröge on Tuesday from the German news agency in Berlin. “Species protection concerns are further taken into account.”

The agreement was confirmed to the dpa by representatives of the three factions. “The expansion of renewable energy has absolute priority for a climate-neutral energy supply,” said Dröge. Carbon neutrality means that all greenhouse gases must be avoided or stored. In concrete terms, this concerns the implementation of new EU rules, which the Federal Cabinet had already decided on at the end of January.

The German government has set very ambitious targets for the expansion of renewable energy sources. Onshore wind energy alone is expected to double from 58 gigawatts in 2022 to 115 gigawatts in 2030. However, planning, approval and construction of a wind turbine currently takes an average of five to seven years.

By 2030, the share of renewable energy sources in electricity generation should increase to 80 percent, up from 44 percent recently. This is part of the so-called energy transition. In April, the last three nuclear power plants in Germany will go offline. Electricity generation from coal must be phased out by 2038 at the latest and agreement has already been reached for the phase-out by 2030 for the West German lignite mining areas.
