In the Laboratorio Cura hospital in São Paulo, a special accident occurred in mid-January: when he accompanied his mother to an appointment, the lawyer Leandro Mathias de Novaes took his gun to the hospital. The strong magnetic field of the MRI machine caused a shot that hit him directly in the stomach.
As the “New York Post” reports, the accident victim was a known gun enthusiast and had several thousand followers on TikTok. On January 16, he wanted to accompany his mother to an appointment at the Laboratorio Cura medical center. Staff instructed the two to remove all metal objects before entering the MRI room, per protocol.
Novaes, however, hadn’t mentioned the weapon, nor had he wanted to leave it outside the room. When he entered the room with his mother, the magnetic field pulled the gun from his waistband and set it off. The shot hit the lawyer in the abdomen – he was taken straight to São Luiz Morumbi Hospital, where he struggled to survive for more than two weeks. He finally succumbed to his injuries on February 6.
The Brazilian legal community is deeply shocked by his death. In a statement, the Bar Association of Brazil in Cotia writes: “It is with great regret that OAB Cotia informs all our fellow lawyers of the unexpected loss of our dear friend and lawyer, Dr. Leandro Mathias de Novaes with me.” You feel the pain the family is going through right now.
After the accident, the medical laboratory also reported: “We would like to emphasize that the team followed all accident prevention protocols, as is common practice in all departments.” Both the patient and his attendant were properly briefed on procedures for access to the examination room and advised to remove all metal objects.
The spokesperson for the institution added that both Mr De Novaes and his mother signed a form on the logs, but the lawyer did not name his gun and entered the ward with her “at his own risk”.
Police confirmed that the gun was properly registered and that the lawyer had a valid gun license. The incident in Brazil is not the first bizarre accident in an MRI room: In 2018, a 32-year-old man from India died in a hospital after entering an MRI room while holding an oxygen cylinder.
