Family of Murdered Camerawoman Sues Alec Baldwin Cholera Outbreak in Malawi Costs More Than 1,200 Dead

American actor Alec Baldwin (64) faces another lawsuit after the fatal shot at a camerawoman during a western film shoot. The parents and younger sister of murdered camerawoman Halyna Hutchins, who live in Ukraine, have filed a civil lawsuit against Baldwin and others involved in the shooting of the movie “Rust,” U.S. attorney Gloria Allred said Thursday in Los Angeles.

The family accuses those responsible for, among other things, the production of “Rust” of violating numerous safety measures and acting negligently. The plaintiffs are seeking unknown damages.

Hutchins’ death is a great loss to her parents and sister, Allred said. The camerawoman also supported the family in Ukraine financially and wanted to bring her family to the US. Her mother Olga, who works as a nurse in Kiev, was deeply affected by her daughter’s “shocking” death. According to Allred, Baldwin did not contact family members and did not apologize after being shot on set.

A criminal case is already pending against Baldwin and gunsmith Hannah Gutierrez-Reed. Prosecutors in the US state of New Mexico filed a manslaughter lawsuit against both of them in January. If found guilty with aggravating circumstances, they face a prison sentence of up to five years.

Hutchins, 42, was fatally injured while filming the western “Rust” on a Santa Fe movie ranch in October 2021. Baldwin, who served as the film’s lead actor and producer, held a gun during rehearsal for a scene when there was a shot went off. Director Joel Souza was hit in the shoulder by the projectile and was injured. Investigations later revealed that there was a real bullet in the Colt. Baldwin has always denied any responsibility for the fatal incident.

Hutchins is survived by a husband and a son. Widower Matthew Hutchins filed a civil suit against Baldwin and other donors in February 2022. In October, however, he announced that an out-of-court settlement had been reached and the lawsuit had been settled. Details of a possible severance payment have not been disclosed. According to Allred, the camerawoman’s parents and sister were not involved in this process. (sda/dpa)
