Thailand fears for Princess Bajrakitiyabha Police take Greta Thunberg into custody after further protests

A month after the sudden collapse of the Thai princess Bajrakitiyabha, the country continues to worry about the possible heir to the throne. King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s eldest daughter fainted in mid-December while training her dogs in the northeastern city of Nakhon Ratchasima.

The 44-year-old, affectionately known as “Princess Pa”, was airlifted to King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok. She is in a coma, but not much is known about her exact condition.

The palace spoke in an initial report of heart problems. Bajrakitiyabha is connected to equipment to maintain heart, lung and kidney function. The website recently reported that the princess was still unconscious. Cardiac arrhythmias due to a bacterial infection were given as the reason.

An altar with a portrait of the princess and her orange king’s flag has been standing at the hospital for weeks. Again and again people lay flowers in orange tones, pray and bow before their picture. Orange is Bajrakitiyabha’s birth color: she was born on a Thursday, which is associated with this color in Thailand.

Followers are also waiting for news in front of the hospital next to photos of the princess that they have hung there. The hospital is closely monitored by police officers. In temples across the country, people also pray in front of their portraits. New Year’s celebrations in Bangkok were also much less noisy and colorful than usual due to concerns over Bajrakitiyabha.

The doctor of law came from the first marriage of the current king (70). From 2012 to 2014, she was her country’s ambassador to Austria. She also worked temporarily at the United Nations in New York. According to observers, she has been part of the king’s circle for many years and is considered his possible successor. The Royal Family is a politically and socially extremely important institution in Thailand. (aeg/sda/dpa)
