According to activists, countless people in Iran have protested against the imminent execution of two young protesters.
Prominent activists and social media users reported Monday evening that a crowd gathered outside a prison near the capital Tehran.
Relatives also rushed to the infamous Gohardasht Prison in Karaj to demonstrate against the planned execution of two convicts Mohammed Ghobadlou and Mohammed Boroughani. Users had previously reported in online media that their execution was imminent.
Protesters were sentenced to death
According to New York Times research, Mohammed Ghobadlou is 19 years old. He was arrested in Karaj. Iran’s judiciary had sentenced him to death for allegedly setting fire to a government building and injuring a security officer.
Mohammed Boroughani (22) is a hairdresser and was arrested in Tehran shortly after the protests broke out at the end of September. He is suspected of hitting a police officer.
Iran had already hanged two young men on Saturday. Mohammed-Mehdi Karami († 22) and Sejed-Mohammed Hosseini († 39) were blamed for the death of a security guard during protests in November.
The death of Jina Mahsa Amini sparked protests in Iran
In December, two men were sentenced to death in connection with demonstrations critical of the system.
The trigger for the nationwide protests in Iran was the death of Jina Mahsa Amini on September 16, 2022 in police custody. The Iranian Kurd was arrested by the so-called moral police for violating Iran’s Islamic dress code.
Switzerland condemns the executions. Switzerland rejects the death penalty “in all circumstances,” the Foreign Ministry (EDA) wrote on Twitter. The tweet was written by EDA Secretary of State Livia Leu (62), who was herself ambassador to Tehran. (SDA/nad)
