Donald Trump (76) has many enemies. its biggest? Trump would probably say Jack Smith (54). He calls him “armed monster”, “political killer” and “extremely partisan Trump hater”.
Jack Smith is the man assigned as a special prosecutor to find evidence of Trump’s wrongdoings during the January 6, 2021 Capitol storm and in the custody of classified documents. The congressional committee that recommended investigating Trump turned over all investigative documents to Smith.
It is Biden’s Attorney General Merrick Garland (70) who will decide in 2023 whether an investigation should actually be launched. Trump and his supporters describe the investigations against him as purely politically motivated.
Investigators for crimes in Kosovo
Smith has experience with politically sensitive matters. From 2008 he worked at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, where he supervised investigations into war crimes and genocide.
He now works under US President Barack Obama (61) in the Justice Department, where he led investigations into corruption and electoral crimes against politicians. In 2018 he moved back to The Hague, this time to the special tribunal for Kosovo, where he is still investigating war crimes as chief prosecutor.
Smith is from Clay, New York, where he also earned his first stripes as an assistant district attorney. He carried out the death sentence against Ronell Wilson (40), who had killed two police officers, which was later commuted to life imprisonment.
Smith is not the only Trump fighter. In the state of Georgia, Chief Prosecutor Fani Willis, 51, wants to sue Trump for asking the Republican Secretary of the Interior to “find” more than 11,000 ballots for him after the election.
What does Trump’s tax statement reveal?
Trump is still threatened with adversity in the old year. All of his tax records from 2015 to 2020 are expected to be released on Friday. For years, Trump had resisted using legal means to release the documents to the Finance Committee — eventually failing in the Supreme Court. The documents should provide new insights into the ex-president’s finances.
Among other things, the Democrats wanted to check whether the documents contained indications of a conflict of interest and whether Trump had used questionable methods to cut taxes.
For Trump, 2023 will be a fateful year. His candidacy for president of the United States is in jeopardy. Trump fighter Jack Smith will do everything he can to make sure it doesn’t happen a second time. (gf)
