Brazilian President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has presented most of his future cabinet. His Vice President Geraldo Alckmin will take over the Industry and Commerce portfolio, Lula announced on Thursday at the presentation of 16 future ministers.
Sister of Councilor Marielle Franco killed by paramilitaries, Anielle Franco becomes Minister of Ethnic Equality. “We are trying to form a government that represents as much as possible the political forces that campaigned with us,” Lula said. In his speech, he called on future ministers to take into account the diversity of the Brazilian population in their departments.
In recent weeks, Lula has nominated a number of ministers, including 2018 presidential candidate Fernando Haddad for economic affairs, diplomat Mauro Vieira as foreign minister and singer Margareth Menezes as culture minister. Left-wing politician Lula won in a runoff against incumbent right-wing Jair Bolsonaro at the end of October. The 77-year-old was president of the largest country in Latin America from 2003 to 2010. He will take up his duties on January 1, 2023. (sda/dpa)
