Nepal’s highest court has ordered the release of a notorious French serial killer from prison.
The 78-year-old Charles Sobhraj, nicknamed the ‘snake’, whose life story inspired the British TV series (‘The Serpent’) and several books, is expected to be released from prison in the capital Kathmandu this year. week after 19 years in prison, the prison chief told the German news agency on Thursday. He earned his nickname, the “snake”, for his cunning – time and time again he evaded the authorities.
The man has been linked to the murder of several tourists in different countries. In Nepal he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of two tourists.
The court ordered his release a year before the official end of his sentence, given his age, good behavior and deteriorating health. He would have to leave Nepal within 15 days of his release. (sda/dpa)
