The legendary love movie “Titanic” ends tragically. After the shipwreck, the crew of the sunken Titanic floats in icy waters on the open Atlantic Ocean. Jack Dawson, played by Leonardo di Caprio (48), leaves his mistress Rose DeWitt Bukater, Kate Winslet (47), a floating door where she can save herself and thus avoid death. He freezes to death in the ice water.
Since its theatrical release exactly 25 years ago, fans have claimed that Dawson could have had room on the door and survived that way. Now director James Cameron, 68, tells the “Toronto Sun” that a scientific study has been done to “put an end to the claim once and for all.”
“Jack Dawson had to die”
To refute the claim, the scene was reenacted. A raft was built and left in icy water. Two stuntmen with the same physical dimensions as the main characters in the film were equipped with sensors and positioned themselves in different configurations on the raft.
Neither could have survived, Cameron said after the experiment, for which a National Geographic special had been prepared.
