“A convoy of warships of the Pacific Fleet has set sail to participate in the joint Russian-Chinese naval exercise Maritime Cooperation-2022,” the Russian defense ministry said in its Telegram channel on Monday. Accordingly, joint missile and naval artillery firing exercises are planned in the East China Sea.
From the Russian side, the flagship of the Pacific Fleet, the missile cruiser “Varyag”, a frigate and two corvettes are taking part. In addition, aircraft and helicopters will be used in the maneuver, which will last from December 21 to 27. In 2005, both parties practiced the war together for the first time at sea. The exercises have been held annually since 2012. In light of the Russian offensive war in Ukraine and the recent tensions that have arisen around the Beijing-claimed island of Taiwan, the military maneuvers are viewed with suspicion by neighboring countries.
