There are survivors: after the large aquarium burst, the Berlin fire brigade rescued several dozen live fish from the “Hotel Dom Aquarée”, which was littered with rubble. The rescuers had actually given up hope: In the morning it was still said that all 1,500 fish in the world’s largest cylindrical aquarium, the “Aquadom”, had died after bursting.

A spokesman for the fire brigade told t-online in the evening: “In the afternoon, employees of the rescue service were present at a great height in the hotel. On the lower ring of the aquarium, they found the fish at a height of five to ten meters.” According to the spokesman, the water had apparently collected in some cavities in the ring.

The lucky fish was able to survive here. It was initially unclear how many rescued specimens there were in the evening. The spokesperson: “It’s a colorful mix. There are all sizes and colors, but also sea and freshwater fish.” In the afternoon it had already become known that fish had also been found in the basement of the hotel.

“Aquadom” in Berlin: high-altitude rescuers make a lucky find

The twelve aquariums with saltwater fish were spared from the explosion – according to Mitte environmental councilor Almut Neumann, there should be about 400 to 500 smaller fish.

According to the fire service spokesman, the fish that have since been rescued from the debris field have already found a new home: the underwater world Sealife, in the immediate vicinity of the now closed hotel, has already taken care of the saltwater fish and the freshwater fish are going to the Berliner in the weekend zoo .

“Today we don’t do that anymore,” said the spokesperson. “We want to spare you this extra stress today.”

There were also exciting hours in the “Aquadom”: the aquarium in the hotel near Alexanderplatz burst early in the morning, and a million liters of water then poured out of the shattered glass cylinder. Since there was hardly anyone in the lobby early in the morning, only two people were slightly injured. (t-online, pm)
