British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wants to crack down on radical protests by climate activists. “Whoever breaks the law should feel the seriousness of it,” Sunak said Thursday after meeting with police officers about how to deal with roadblocks and other illegal forms of protest. In Britain, the group “Just Stop Oil” has recently attracted attention. They are also responsible for the tomato soup in a Vincent van Gogh painting in a London museum.
“It is completely unacceptable that the daily lives of ordinary citizens are disrupted by a selfish minority,” Sunak said. The police has its full support to act decisively against such protests. The Ministry of the Interior had previously announced stricter measures. Some climate activists have already been sentenced to prison terms.
Sunak did not comment on the activists’ demand not to issue permits for new fossil projects. The British government recently granted new permits for oil and gas fields in the North Sea. According to climate researchers, this goes against the plan to be climate neutral by 2050.
