China’s party leadership threatens to crack down on new protests at secret minister posts during Corona: no-confidence vote in Australia’s ex-prime minister

In light of China’s biggest wave of protests in decades, the country’s political leadership has announced a strong crackdown on the unrest. At a meeting on Tuesday, the Communist Party’s Politics and Law Commission also blamed “hostile” elements for disrupting public order, state media reported Wednesday. The background is the widespread outrage among the population about the government’s harsh zero-Covid measures.

“It is necessary to resolve conflicts and disputes in a timely manner and to help solve people’s practical problems,” the Xinhua news agency said in a statement. “We have a legal obligation to crack down on infiltration and sabotage by enemy forces.” “Criminal actions disrupting social order” should also be prosecuted and general social stability effectively maintained.

The statement did not directly address the weekend’s protests against rigorous zero-Covid measures such as lockdowns, enforced quarantines and mass testing. But the former editor-in-chief of the party newspaper “Global Times”, Hu Xijin, saw a “clear warning” in the indirect message: “The protesters must have got it,” the commentator loyal to the system wrote on Twitter. “If they repeat these protests, the risks will greatly increase.” (meg/sda/dpa)
