They smile happily at the camera. A light-hearted moment for the Lee family from Australia. Everything is different now. Kirsty and Steve Lee, both in their early 40s and parents of a boy (4) and a girl (5), were shocked to be diagnosed with cancer on the same day. Within a few hours, her life was turned upside down, reports the TV channel 9News.
The phone rang last Tuesday. Kirsty Lee’s GP called to say the Australian had breast cancer. Soon after, her husband received the news that he had rectal cancer. Now the two have to undergo chemotherapy and radiation for a year.
A horror idea for the active parents. “They go on bike rides or go to the beach, and I think the thought of them not getting out of bed depresses them so much,” Sonya Kohlhagen, a close friend of the family, told the TV station. All four are still processing the cancer diagnoses.
Family must be supported financially
To raise money for the hard times, Kohlhagen has launched a fundraiser as the couple fear losing their sales and administrative jobs and the house they live in. The donations are used to support the family financially. Campaign goal: 30,000 Australian dollars. Almost 18,000 Australian dollars have been raised so far, which corresponds to more than 11,000 francs.
Kirsty and Steve Lee met and fell in love eight years ago. The couple married shortly before the strict corona measures in the country. Before the diagnosis of cancer, they were perfectly healthy and had hardly been ill otherwise. Now the parents have to fight cancer at the same time. (lrc)
