IAEA monitors safety measures in all Ukrainian nuclear power plants

The Khmelnytskyi and Rivne power plants will also soon be inspected on site. According to Grossi, an IAEA visit has already been made to the decommissioned Chernobyl nuclear reactor.

According to an IAEA report from early November, the organization’s experts could, among other things, assess the technical systems and emergency plans of the four factories for safety aspects and possibly make recommendations. In contrast, the IAEA has been stationing staff at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhia nuclear power plant since September to continuously monitor the situation in the disputed nuclear power plant.

By Wednesday it became clear that not only the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is in danger from the war, when for the first time diesel generators had to be used temporarily to cool the fuel rods in the plants in southern Ukraine, Khmelnytskyi and Rivne, as the external power supply by Russian attacks was affected. “This is very worrying,” said Grossi. Without reliable cooling, the risk of a nuclear accident due to fuel overheating increases.
