Zelenskiy pays tribute to the Ukrainians’ struggle for freedom

“We are ready to give the last. Ready to fight to the end,” Zelensky said in a video message Monday on the occasion of the so-called “Day of Dignity and Freedom.” Ukraine has paid a very high price for freedom and will continue to pay it, the head of state said, referring to the thousands of war victims.

Everyone has seen what the Ukrainians are capable of and what defenders they have, Zelensky said. “How to withstand one of the greatest armies in the world and become one of the best armies in the world.” Hardened fighters would have been accompanied by musicians, actors, Olympic champions, IT specialists, scientists and business people. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians did not board planes, but lined up at the conscription offices to defend Ukraine.

Zelensky also praised the bravery of civilians who had held back enemy tanks and armored personnel carriers “with their bare hands” and went to demonstrations against the Russian occupiers despite gunfire and stun grenades. Doctors operated despite bombardments, fields were cultivated “under bombs and bullets”.

Ukraine’s “Day of Dignity and Freedom” commemorates the start of the bloody Euromaidan protests in 2013/14. The reason at the time was the decision of the pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych not to sign an association agreement with the EU.
