About 10,000 minks escaped from a breeding facility in Ohio and are now on the loose. Several dead animals have already been recovered from a highway near the farm, the New York Times reported Wednesday (local time), citing authorities.
The hungry soft-furred carnivores could attack pets and grazing livestock, the sheriff’s office warned in the paper. Van Wert County, where the incident took place, is a rural area with many farms. Mink fur is popular for fur coats.
Someone broke into the farmhouse and opened cages, the New York Times wrote, citing the owner. In total, between 25,000 and 40,000 were housed. The sheriff told the paper who released the mink is now under investigation. In the past, mink farms have been targeted by animal rights activists.
According to the newspaper, a large proportion of American mink farms sell their products abroad because the domestic market for fur is small. Several luxury brands are now doing without the processing of real fur. (sda/dpa)
