In the South American crisis country Venezuela, a beauty queen has been chosen for the first time since the start of the pandemic in front of a large audience.
The flight attendant and marketing student Diana Silva (25), who represents the capital district of Caracas, was announced as “Miss Venezuela” on Thursday evening (local time).
“For me, being a beauty queen in this new era means much more than what you can see on the outside,” Silva said, according to the newspaper “El Nacional”. The beauty pageant is one of the most traditional events in Venezuela.
The country is something of a superpower in the beauty queen business. The country has produced half a dozen “Miss Universe” and “Miss World” each. An entire industry has sprung up around the selection and training of models and beauty queens.
Two years ago, the match was recorded without spectators for the first time due to the pandemic. Last year he returned in a face-to-face event with only a few spectators.
In 2022, the participants again paraded in swimwear and designer clothes in front of thousands of spectators and also answered questions from the jury. “The new beauty queen was chosen during a gala that brought the competition back to life: a live show at the Poliedro in Caracas,” wrote El Nacional.
Authoritarian Venezuela has been in deep political and economic crisis for years, despite having one of the largest oil reserves in the world. According to statistics, more than seven million people have left Venezuela because of poverty and violence. (aeg/sda/dpa)
