Death toll in Iran continues to rise – including many children Twitter pauses subscription verification after many fake accounts

The Iranian people have been revolting against the regime for weeks – at the risk of their lives. More than 300 people have died so far.

At least 326 people have been killed in Iran since the protests started about eight weeks ago. This is reported by CNN, citing the human rights organization IHRNGO from Norway. Accordingly, the number includes 43 children and 25 women. The sum is the “absolute minimum”. The information cannot be independently verified, also because the Iranian government does not provide information on the death toll in the protests.

The IHRNGO has called on the international community to take “decisive and timely action” against the rising death toll. She has also stated that ways must be found to “hold the authorities of the Islamic Republic to account for their gross violations of human rights”. The organization calls for the establishment of an international commission of inquiry by the UN, which should make it easier in the future to hold perpetrators to account.

Iran has been protesting against the government and the Islamic system of government since mid-September. The reason was the death of 22-year-old Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini in police custody. Chancellor Olaf Scholz had strongly criticized the Iranian leadership given the serious human rights violations in the country. ‘What kind of government are you that shoots at its own citizens? Anyone who acts like this must count on our resistance,” he says in his video podcast that was published on Saturday.
