Twenty people have been killed in a minibus accident in northern Egypt. Eight others were injured when the bus crashed into a canal in Dachalia governorate, prosecutors said on Saturday. The driver, who was also injured in the accident, has been arrested.
He was “surprised by an approaching car” and was too fast “to avoid it,” the prosecutor said. It is suspected that he “called at the wheel”. He was also under the influence of narcotics, according to a preliminary drug test. Road accidents are common in Egypt. The roads are often in poor condition and traffic rules are often ignored. According to official figures, about 7,000 people died in traffic accidents last year. (SDA/chs)
