At least 70 people have died from cholera in Malawi this month. Since March, the country has been battling an outbreak of the bacteria that can cause severe abdominal pain and diarrhea. Since then, almost 6,000 people have become infected. A total of 180 people were killed.
The outbreak began in southern Malawi but quickly spread north and west. Infections were registered in 26 of the country’s 29 districts. UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) are supporting the African country in containing the outbreak, including by providing vaccines and antibiotics.
The outbreak has put pressure on health care in Malawi. A few days ago, the Minister of Health announced that medical care in the affected districts would be further intensified. “We have to make sure that no more people fall victim to cholera.”
