‘Victory for greater social justice and climate protection’: SP and Greens welcome Lula Trump to take US Supreme Court dispute over tax documents

The SP, the Greens, Greenpeace, the WWF and the Society for Threatened Peoples congratulated Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his victory in Brazil’s presidential election. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EDA) in Bern wants to expand relations with Brazil.

Federal President Ignazio Cassis congratulated Lula with a congratulatory letter, the EDA announced Monday evening to the Keystone-SDA news agency.

US President Joe Biden, German government and head of state Frank-Walter Steinmeier and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen congratulated Lula.

The Social Democratic Party of Switzerland wrote on Twitter of a “victory of democracy for greater social justice and climate protection”. The Swiss Green Party wrote of an “election victory that gives hope – for democracy, human rights, global climate protection”.

The environmental group Greenpeace “applauds” the election, but warned of difficulties because Lula’s rival and opponent Jair Bolsonaro has the majority in Congress (Parliament). The WWF – as Greenpeace tweeted Monday – pointed to the “very dense” election result, but emphasized that the Brazilians wanted to protect the environment and indigenous peoples.

The Society for Threatened Peoples was “relieved” in a statement about the election results, expressing hopes that Lula “will deliver on his election promises and prioritize strengthening indigenous rights and combating the climate crisis”. (sda)
