Suspension bridge collapses in India: Death toll rises to at least 90 Biden votes ahead of US general election

Dozens of people have died when a suspension bridge collapsed over a river in western India, according to media reports. Government officials from Gujarat state initially spoke of at least 68 dead, but the number has since increased significantly. In addition, about 100 people were injured and many are still missing.

The accident happened Sunday evening (local time) in Morbi, Gujarat state, the Times of India newspaper and local media reported. Many victims fell in the water. A major rescue operation is underway. There were also helpers in boats. Gujarat Interior Minister Harsh Sanghavi said more than 70 people have been rescued.

The walkway over the Machchhu River only reopened this week after renovations, the report said. The building dates from the 19th century. At the time of the collapse, many people were on the suspension bridge. According to “The Times of India” there were about 400 people, according to the broadcaster NDTV even about 500 people. An investigation is underway, Gujarat Labor Minister Brijesh Merja told NDTV.

Images and videos on social media show how the structure in the middle seems to be falling apart and several people clinging to keep from falling into the water.
