The new Zulu king Misuzulu is now also recognized by South Africa

South Africa’s President Ramaphosa recognized the royal dignity of Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini (48) at a ceremonial meeting. This ends the question of who is the rightful successor to King Zwelithini.

The traditional Zulu coronation had already taken place in August. But Miszulu still needed the approval of the South African president to gain access to a €3.6million annual government allowance for his royal family.

The meeting with President Ramaphosa took place at Durban Stadium:

  • President Ramaphosa and King Misuzulu kaZwelithini

Zwelithini died last year after being king of the Zulu nation for fifty years. The vast majority of the estimated 11 million Zulus live in South Africa. This makes them the largest population group in the country.

The new king’s mother would temporarily assume the honors after Zwelithini’s death, but she died after two months. She had named her son Misuzulu as heir to the throne. However, the preference of other members of the royal family went to King Zwelithini’s eldest son, Prince Simakade. The family now seems to have come to terms with the successor.
