Xandra Velzeboer showed her class in the 1,000 meters in Montreal. In a thrilling finale, she defeated the strong Korean riders Shim Suk-hee and Seo Whi-min and celebrated the first World Cup victory of her career.
Velzeboer became world champion over 500 meters in Montreal last year and won World Cup bronze over 1,000 meters. On Saturday she won her semi-final and quickly took the lead in the final. Seo and Shim (two-time world champion at this distance and holder of 29 World Cup gold medals) were still pushing, but Velzeboer was just ahead of them.
Yara van Kerkhof and Michelle Velzeboer took first and third place in the B final.
Teun Boer won bronze in the men’s 1,000 meters. Latvia’s Roberts Kruzbergs won gold over this distance.
