More than 2 million euros seized: 1,700 arrests in drug raids in France

French police officers have arrested 1,738 people in numerous drug raids across the country in recent days. “We will continue the anti-drug operations,” French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin (41) announced on Saturday afternoon in Saint-Denis near Paris. The drug trade must be eradicated.

2.4 million euros (approximately 2.3 million francs) were seized in operations over the past ten days. Emergency services also seized 150 kilos of drugs, mainly cocaine and heroin. More than 300 people were taken into custody in Paris and the Seine-Saint-Denis department northeast of the capital alone, Darmanin said.

Drug war in high-rise neighborhoods

The Interior Minister assured that the fight against drugs should not only be waged in the security sector. Education, the fight against addiction and the issue of parental responsibility also played a role.

The police raids dubbed “Place Nette” are part of a strategy launched last summer aimed at eliminating around 4,000 drug outlets in the country. For this purpose, police officers are deployed 24 hours a day at designated locations in the cities for a longer period of time. They have to arrest drug dealers and prevent them from starting their business again after a short police operation a few meters away.

Drug gangs are particularly active in the high-rise areas of many major cities in France and make life difficult for other residents. There are always violent clashes between gangs in which even uninvolved people lose their lives. (SDA)
