The four attackers at Crocus City Hall near Moscow are expected to “spend the rest of their lives in a ‘coffin’ and move only in a flexed position.” This is what a Russian civil rights activist familiar with prison conditions for terrorists says.
The four Tajiks, aged between 19 and 32, were caught fleeing the day after the terrorist massacre that left 143 dead and were immediately severely beaten. Soon they would probably only wish for death, the civil rights activist said.
The defendants appeared in court with signs of torture on their faces: one was in a wheelchair, one was missing an ear. Meanwhile, there is a lively discussion in Russian networks about how the men will be protected from other prisoners so that they survive the trial.
The defendants are housed in Lefortovo prison in the Moscow district of the same name. The prison in the Soviet Union, built in 1881, served as a torture place for the KGB.
According to archives, Lefortovo prison had an oversized meat grinder that was used to grind victims’ bodies into pulp and then dump them into the city’s sewage system. Today, Lefortovo is just a detention center, but one that is still feared.
The outer walls were built before the revolution and are up to 1.5 meters thick. There are more than 100 double cells, the online portal of the Russian newspaper “Komsomolskaya Pravda” quotes a senior human rights representative in Moscow.
A double cell is about seven square meters in size and care is taken to ensure that every prisoner appears healthy during the trial – almost feudal conditions compared to what the terrorists face after their conviction.
“Nothing good awaits those who committed a terrorist attack,” says Russian civil rights activist Alexei Melnikov. “For the rest of their lives they will lie in a ‘coffin’ and only move in a bent position with their hands behind their backs.”
Such a ‘coffin room’ measures four to six square meters. In Russia, Melnikov says, “life imprisonment is scary. I’ve seen people with life sentences. Most of them demand a quick death.” Soon they would be buried in an unmarked grave. This is “God’s judgment,” Melnikov said. “The eternal torment of hell.”
Meanwhile, investigators from the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation state that there is evidence of the link between the Crocus terrorists and Ukraine. Relevant technical equipment was secured. In addition, financial and crypto transactions would prove contacts with Ukrainian nationalists, the researchers said in a statement on Telegram.
Alexander Bortnikov, head of Russia’s domestic secret service (FSB), repeats accusations that “the US and Britain are also likely behind the terrorist attack.” Bortnikov presents no evidence.
Kiev formally distanced itself from the attack. “There was no involvement whatsoever by Ukraine,” U.S. National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said in a statement after the attack.
