It was restless last night around the Europa League game between Sturm Graz and Feyenoord. Feyenoord hooligans caused many problems both inside and outside the stadium in Graz, Austria, during and after the lost game. It was mainly young hooligans, other Feyenoord supporters tell regional broadcaster Rijnmond. At least one vandal was arrested.
“Very intense,” says a supporter who, like other Feyenoord supporters, wishes to remain anonymous. Especially after the final whistle it went wrong. A supporter compares the situation to the game against Nancy in 2006. Back then, fan riots broke out in the northern French city and at the stadium, with dozens of Feyenoord fans breaking through the fences.
According to eyewitnesses, dozens of hooligans raged last night: they harassed doors, toilets and aid stations in Sturm Stadium. The police used tear gas to calm them down. “But they had to take advantage of that. It was really only the fault of our own fans,” a Feyenoord supporter tells Rijnmond. “I really have vicarious shame.”
Other supporters were also shot in the face. For example, one of them tells the regional broadcaster that he fled into a toilet cubicle and dragged a Feyenoord stewardess inside to protect her. “But the door was ripped open and she too took the full force. The Austrian riot police seemed to be panicking.”
