Due to the problems at Schiphol, KLM lost 175 million euros. It is about 30 million euros in compensation for passengers and 145 million euros in loss of income, the airline announced when it announced its quarterly figures.
In the summer period from July to September, the demand for air tickets was high, but due to the problems at Schiphol, flights had to be cancelled. Not all passengers could leave, trips had to be rebooked.
Despite the chaos, KLM reported an operating profit of 443 million euros. Operating profit of sister company Air France was higher, 570 million euros. The bottom line was the profit for the entire group in this quarter 466 million euros.
It was the first quarter with the new President Marjan Rintel at the helm. On July 1, she succeeded Pieter Elbers.
The problems at Schiphol will continue in the coming months. There is a maximum number of passengers that are allowed to depart due to staff shortages at the airport. KLM previously said the company had had enough. “Also, we’re putting a carefully built reputation at risk,” the company wrote in a statement.
