Maduro officially announces his aspiration for a third term in front of the CNE

Representative Venezuela, Nicolas Maduroofficially released this Monday, ago National Electoral Council (CNE)his candidacy for the next presidential election July 28in which he will compete for the third term in office, which he has held since 2013.

The Chavista leader went to the headquarters of the electoral body in Caracas after participating in a march called by the ruler United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) in support of the registration, thus becoming the tenth politician to make his aspiration official, a few hours before the deadline set by the schedule for submitting candidacies.

Maduro, 61, is in the running to extend his rule for another six years, which would exceed the 14-year term his predecessor amassed. Hugo Chavez.

According to the state channel VTV, 14 political organizations proposed Maduro as a candidate.

Along with the current head of state, representatives have applied to compete in the upcoming elections Luis Eduardo Martínez, Juan Alvarado, José Brito and Javier Bertucciformer mayors Claudio Fermín and Daniel Ceballos, opposition Antonio Ecarri, comedian Benjamín Rausseo and Luis Rattidissidents from the broader opposition sector.

Meanwhile, the main opposition coalition, Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD)condemns the obstacles in accessing the system and reports their candidate, the historian Corina Yoriselected as such because of the disqualification that prevents Maria Corina Machadothe winner of the October primaries, competes for public office in this and other elections until 2036.

For this reason, PUD asked the HNS – which did not state the reasons for this impediment – to extend the deadline for proposing candidates by three days, in order to “remove the factual and legal violations that occurred in the procedure”. .

The electoral body also did not comment on PUD’s request to extend the deadline for registration.

Yoris assured this Monday that the opposition he represents has exhausted all the means at its disposal “so that this could be resolved”, which is why he asked Maduro to “respect the Constitution” and his political rights.

For his part, Machado warned that if the candidate who will compete against Chavismo in the presidential elections is “chosen” by Maduro’s government, these elections cannot be considered elections.
