Curious story from Australia: A man (38) had to be rescued by police in Brisbane on Monday after being stuck in an underground sewer for more than 30 hours. As he told emergency responders, all he wanted to do was get his cell phone from one of the drains. But Queensland police are confident he fled into the underground water network. This comes after he allegedly rammed a police officer’s vehicle on Sunday, the BBC reports.
The rescue operation lasted only about five minutes, the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson told the television station. Local media reported that the man was knee-deep in water before firefighters lifted a drain cover so he could climb out. A resident of the surrounding settlement heard the man screaming.
But when he wanted to help, the Australian initially turned him away. “He seemed fine and said he could get out where he came in, so I just left him alone,” the resident said. But when he went to check again on Monday, all he heard was heavy breathing. He then quickly made the emergency call.
On Tuesday, police said the man was driving a suspicious car that reversed and rammed a police vehicle around 4:20 p.m. local time on Sunday. He then took off in his car. He was involved in a second accident in which the other driver suffered minor injuries. Shortly afterwards, the suspect got out of his car and fled on foot. He probably hid in the sewer network and then got stuck. (mgf)
