Aryna Sabalenka was scheduled to compete in the Miami Open on March 22. She is currently number 2 in the world in women’s tennis. A fate now makes her participation questionable: her friend Konstantin Koltsow died unexpectedly on Tuesday in Miami at the age of only 42.
Koltsov was a Belarusian ice hockey player and even played in the NHL with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2002 to 2004. He ended his career in November 2016 after 18 years at HK Dinamo Minsk. This was followed by various positions as head and assistant coach in the Belarusian ice hockey league. Most recently, Koltsow was assistant coach at Salawat Yulayev Ufa.
The club said goodbye via Instagram with the following words:
Sabalenka has not yet publicly responded to her friend’s death. The cause of death is now known: it could have been a blood clot, as the Belarusian media consistently reports.
Blood clots form in wounds or damaged blood vessels. These sometimes come loose and can block other blood vessels. This can lead to vital areas no longer being supplied with blood and the patient dying. (lion)
