And every year the marmot greets us… Before the traditional ski jumping final in Planica, Slovenia, the same question arises year after year: is this Simon Ammann’s last performance? The answer to that in 2024 is no.

The first no: the four-time Olympic champion will not participate in ski flying in Planica next weekend. The second no: he is not thinking about resigning either.

He recently jumped in the Continental Cup

When asked by Blick, the 42-year-old Ammann told management: “I am not going to Planica and I will not stop. I continue to train regularly and jump in Einsiedeln, among other places. My jumps have developed positively, but there is no point in ski flying at the moment.”

Ammann last appeared at the World Cup in Sapporo, Japan, in mid-February. Last weekend he jumped the Continental Cup second class in Poland. The modest result: 18th and 25th place.

Even the 2026 Olympic Games still fascinate him

But after 502 World Cup starts and seven Olympic Games appearances, he clearly still doesn’t have enough. Do the 2026 Olympic Games still appeal to him, who made his World Cup debut in December 1997?

At the end of February he wrote, as usual torn, on the Swiss Olympic blog: “The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina with Simon Ammann? I don’t think that’s realistic. I don’t make plans anymore, but reliving the Olympics in Europe would be a dream. Milano would be destined for me to open up my world and immerse myself in it again.”
