Pakistan has bombed targets in neighboring Afghanistan after a deadly attack on soldiers by Islamist militants.
The Pakistani army and secret service sources confirmed this to the German news agency on Monday. Accordingly, airstrikes in the eastern Afghan provinces of Khost and Paktika on Monday evening targeted Pakistani Taliban fighters believed to have been there.
According to the Pakistani army, several Islamists were killed in the attacks. Taliban government spokesman in Kabul Sabiullah Mujahid said eight women and children had been killed. He warned that such incidents could have consequences “beyond Pakistan’s control.” According to the Ministry of Defense in Kabul, military targets in the neighboring country were subsequently attacked along the border.

At least seven Pakistani soldiers were killed on Saturday in a suicide bombing in the North Waziristan region of the restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, near the Afghan border. Attacks by militant groups, especially the Pakistani Taliban (TTP), have increased recently in Pakistan.
Despite their ideological proximity, the Pakistani Taliban are independent of the Taliban that rule Afghanistan. However, Islamabad repeatedly accuses those in power in Kabul of providing TTP protection on their territory, something the Taliban in Kabul rejects. The accusations are causing tensions between the two countries.
In the past, there have been temporary border closures following firefights between border forces on both sides. Air strikes could mean further escalation. The Pakistani military says it last carried out airstrikes on targets in Afghanistan in April 2022. (rbu/sda/dpa)
