At 7:30 a.m. local time, Australian emergency services were called to Wood Street in Preston, a suburb of Melbourne. Witnesses discovered a body there. It turned out to be a man who had previously fallen from a hot air balloon.
Police then sealed off the area and spoke to the other occupants of the hot air balloon and eyewitnesses to clarify the circumstances of the tragedy. According to the Guardian, an eyewitness spoke of a “truly confronting, shocking scene”.
In a statement, the Australian Balloon Association wrote: “The passengers and pilot are understandably traumatized by this tragedy and the operator is organizing psychological support and counseling for all those affected.”
“Hot air balloon baskets are designed for safety, especially to prevent passengers from accidentally falling out,” the statement continued.
The balloon took off from a reservoir at 7 a.m. local time. After the accident, he landed safely in a park, according to the responsible police. The aviation safety authority has opened an investigation. At this time it is not assumed that this is a fact. (obf)
