What actually happened to the ‘Modern Family’ kids? That’s what they do today

Corina Molen

The children of the chaotic patchwork family from ‘Modern Family’ have grown up before the eyes of viewers. Most of them were not yet teenagers when the sitcom started. Yet they regularly made millions of fans laugh.

But what happened to them? This is what Haley, Luke, Alex, Lily, Manny and Joe are doing today.

Sarah Hyland has suffered from multicystic renal dysplasia since childhood and received a kidney from her father. During the filming of “Modern Family,” that kidney failed and her brother donated his to her. To prevent her body from rejecting this kidney, Hyland had to take a lot of medication, which often made her so tired on set that she could no longer remember some episodes. This also affected her mental health.

After “Modern Family” ended, she had a guest appearance on “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” and was the host of the reality TV show “Love Island USA” for two years. Also in 2022, she starred in the spin-off series ‘Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin’ alongside her former co-star Adam DeVine.

In addition to acting, the 33-year-old co-founded a nutritional supplement company.

In 2022, Hyland married former ‘Bachelorette’ candidate and radio host Wells Adams. Most of her “Modern Family” co-stars were at the wedding.

Ariel Winter did not have an easy childhood. In 2012, a court confirmed that Winter had been abused by her mother and her custody was revoked. She then lived for a while with her sister, who took over custody. In 2017, she began law school at UCLA. But her ultimate goal is to open a dog shelter.

The 26-year-old has only had a few acting roles since the end of ‘Modern Family’. Since 2023, she has been the voice actress of D’Erika Tendi in “Star Trek: Lower Decks”.

Winter has been in a relationship with actor Luke Benward since 2020. They have six dogs together.

Since the finale of “Modern Family,” Nolan Gould has had guest-starring roles on “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Miranda’s Victim” and “The Nana Project.” Unlike his character Luke, Gould says he is very smart and has a high IQ. He graduated from high school at the age of 13. The 25-year-old studied film at UCLA.

On Instagram he describes himself as an environmental activist and on a second account he shares videos and photos of himself climbing and diving and spending a lot of time in nature.

Aubrey Anderson-Emmons was only two years old when she started playing Lily, Mitchell and Cameron’s daughter. In 2012, at the age of four, she became the youngest actress to win the Screen Actors Guild Award along with her casting colleagues.

Anderson-Emmons hasn’t acted much since “Modern Family” and is currently still in school. She and her mother have a YouTube channel where they publish videos about food. The 16-year-old also plays guitar in a band called October.

Rico Rodriguez may seem far removed from the boy he portrayed in “Modern Family,” but he said in an interview that he and Manny are the same: “I’ve grown into the role and I feel like I’m somehow way I followed his lifestyle. .” This is because he is careful about how he dresses in public and also writes poetry. “Manny is starting to look a little like me, and I’ve started to look a little like him, which is great,” said the 25- year old.

Rodriguez hasn’t found his way to acting since “Modern Family.” Instead, he took a new direction in his career in 2023, taking on a speaking role in the thriller-comedy podcast “How to Win Friends and Disappear People.”

Jeremy Maguire played the youngest of the Dunphy-Pritchett family, “Modern Family” was his acting debut. Since then, the 12-year-old has had a bigger role in the Disney Plus series “Turner & Hooch” and appeared in “SWAT.”

Haley’s friend Dylan (played by Reid Ewing) is also somehow part of the chaotic blended family. After moving to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career, Ewing struggled with body image issues and became obsessed with his appearance. Ewing had his first cosmetic surgery when he was 19. The 35-year-old describes the operation as incredibly painful, both physically and emotionally. Yet he continued to go under the knife afterward.

But this just made him feel worse and worse. He spent a lot of time in isolation because the surgeries took a long time to heal. This prevented him from taking on new roles; he had to borrow money from his family.

Ewing has since sworn off surgeries and is taking care of his mental health. He has appeared in several short films that tell important and profound stories.
