Young man dies during police operation – attack on guard near Paris Hijacked by pirates: Indian Navy frees ship after 3 months

During the attack on the police station in the suburb of La Courneuve, rubbish bins were also set on fire, broadcaster BFMTV and newspaper ‘Le Parisien’ reported, citing police. Accordingly, police forces from the area were brought together to break up the clashes. Six arrests are said to have taken place. There were reportedly calls on social media to avenge the young man’s death.

In the neighboring town of Aubervilliers, an 18-year-old on a scooter was rammed head-on by a police car on Wednesday evening and fatally injured. The young man and a passenger initially ignored the red lights and stop signs of a following police car. A taxi allegedly gave way to an approaching patrol car that had called for reinforcements.

The officers had to move into the opposite lane and collided with the scooter. Although the Paris police prefect has so far seen no reason to doubt the statements of the emergency services, relatives of the 18-year-old accuse the police of foul play.

The case is reminiscent of the death of a 17-year-old during a police stop near Paris last summer. This was followed by protests against police brutality and serious riots that shook France for nights and caused millions in damage. There were repeated lootings, arsons and violent clashes with the police. The government then threatened to take tougher action against young delinquents and their parents. However, police violence has not been discussed much by the government since the unrest. (sda/dpa)
